The path to self-discovery is not brief, as evidenced by the music of Kathy Ross, an experienced singer-songwriter whose most recent album demonstrates her artistic development and her remarkable talent for conveying universal truths in moving, relatable songs that deeply resonate with listeners.
"I'm simply being myself. I'm unafraid of taking risks," declares Ross. "I have confidence in who I am. I'm not afraid to fall. I don't even mind falling. If I fall, I'll get back up."
Her self-assurance and creative passion stem from years of refining her skills in her home state of Texas and a seven-year stay in Nashville, marked by numerous TV appearances and tour stops. For her DARE Records debut, The Girl from East Texas, Ross chose an unconventional path for a country artist by traveling to Miami to collaborate with producer Hal Batt, who is well-known for his work with Julio Iglesias, Regina Belle, and Lionel Hampton, among others.
The duo crafted a diverse album, ranging from "Bad Checks," a chilling examination of an abusive relationship, to "Kiss My Heart Goodbye," a steel guitar-soaked breakup ballad featuring a duet with hitmaker Jon Secada. Ross's songwriting abilities shine on the inspiring "If I Die Tomorrow," and her creative risk-taking is evident in her lively rendition of Nick Gilder's 1978 pop hit "Hot Child in the City."
Ross explains her choice of cover, saying that she wanted to do something unexpected for a country artist. In her performances, she covers a wide range of artists, from Janis Joplin and Fleetwood Mac to Dolly Parton and Faith Hill, in addition to her original songs. The cover of "Hot Child in The City" allowed her to showcase a different vocal side and grow as a singer.
Her talent for making a song of her own began early in her career. Ross, a native Texan, first tasted success as a child when she defeated fellow Texan LeAnn Rimes on Ed McMahon's Star Search competition. Her impressive voice led to invitations to sing the National Anthem at major sports arenas and open for country legend Merle Haggard—all before graduating high school.
However, her love of performing started even earlier. Ross shares that her first public performance was in church at the age of six, but she had been composing songs on her backyard swing set since before that. Her mother recalls that she would stay outside until the sun set, and on one occasion, neighbors asked if Ross could please go inside.
As Ross's talent and ambition grew, she made her way to Nashville, signing a record deal at 17 and working on her debut album. Unfortunately, the deal fell through within a year, but Ross continued to hone her skills and collaborate with producers during her seven-year stay in Nashville. She eventually returned to Texas, admitting that she had become somewhat jaded by the Nashville experience.
A key moment in her career was her collaboration with the late producer Mike O'Neal. He helped Ross rediscover her voice and the joy of singing, which in turn restored her confidence.
Throughout her career, Ross has experienced ups and downs, but she wouldn't change a thing. Now 42 years old, her life experiences enrich her songs with a perspective that can't be fabricated—it has to be earned. On her third album, The Girl from East Texas, Ross worked with Batt to bring her vision to life. The album is filled with powerful songs and captivating performances, showcasing her songwriting skills and her ability to create compelling characters.
Ross believes that her musical talent is a gift and intends to continue sharing it with others. "I'll always be singing," she says. "It's truly a gift, and I am going to do it as called.
As Kathy Ross continues to share her gift of music, her loyal fans eagerly anticipate her future projects. Building on the success of The Girl from East Texas, Ross is eager to explore new musical territory and collaborate with other talented artists. This dedication to growth and learning ensures that her music remains fresh, engaging, and always evolving.
Ross also embraces her role as a mentor and inspiration to upcoming musicians. Drawing on her own experiences, she offers advice and support to young artists navigating the competitive music industry. She believes in the power of perseverance and encourages others to stay true to their passions, even in the face of adversity.
In addition to her music career, Ross is committed to using her platform to raise awareness about issues close to her heart. She actively supports charitable causes and nonprofit organizations, lending her voice to make a difference in the lives of those in need. Her philanthropic efforts further demonstrate her genuine desire to have a positive impact on the world around her.
Looking ahead, Kathy Ross is poised for even greater success. With her powerful voice, skillful songwriting, and unwavering dedication to her craft, she will continue to captivate audiences and forge meaningful connections through her music. Her journey of self-discovery and artistic growth serves as an inspiring testament to the power of staying true to oneself and embracing the unexpected twists and turns that life has to offer.
